Whoa Retro: 30 Years of Air

Air Max 1 Anniversary 30 Years of Air is a modern twist on a blast from the past. Over the years, Air Max 1 has seen a host of colorways and material upgrades, but one thing never changes: its rave reception. The shoe that shook things up for Nike in 1987 remains an icon in footwear history, and 30 Years of Air celebrates its elite status.

The latest material upgrade in 30 Years of Air is the buffed up, shiny finish of its flat laces. In fact, the update is so beloved by Nike that it warranted its own side-by-side comparison (pictured below). On the left are the original, matte finish laces seen in previous Air Max 1’s, as well as other sneakers.

The shiny lace on the right has a more defined weave with different synthetic materials. It also takes on a micro-iteration of nylon webbing, the material most recognized in its wider form on bag straps. The modern, waxy finish brings the right amount of shine to the retro hues of the colorway.

Still Original

Even with its updated materials and cleaner profile, 30 Years Max Air is still original to its core.

Key elements of mixed materials throughout the panels and upper; a defined platform and contrast outsole; and a visible Air unit are still present.

Varsity Purple Peeks Out

The otherwise cool and airy hues that usher in Spring 2018 are given a pop of color with Varsity Purple. It’s kept to a bare minimum, though, so it doesn’t overpower this Air Max 1. In fact, the majority of Varsity Purple is seen at the insole and inside tongue.

The most visible pop of the purple is seen at the eyelets and the Nike Air and Swoosh logo.
