Boardroom Steals the Show

Air Jordan 16 is no stranger to stealing the show. The unique silhouette of the shoe with two looks has been a favorite among sneaker collectors since its 2001 debut. Boardroom turns back time even further, revisiting MJ’s college years for inspiration.

boardroom

Jordan Brand takes MJ’s the formative years and transforms them into a the ultimate kicks of the 21st century. The Charlotte-themed shoe takes its colors to the next level with iridescent teal detail and a matte black microsuede shell and upper. Boardroom rocks a youthful, fresh-faced look with the sophisticated detail of MJ’s legacy, in both basketball and fashion.

Head of the Table

The Charlotte super-shoe is nostalgic, and illustrates how far Michael Jordan’s career has come since he began. Boardroom‘s profile at Nike.com focuses on one achievement in particular:

The latest colorway celebrates MJ’s most recent milestone: the first league superstar to become a team owner.

Nike.com

Jordan went from having his head in the game, to being at the head of the table. So don’t let the colorway fool you: it’s a matter of remembering where the greatness began. From the teal toe box to the iridescent paneling, Boardroom is the right combination of business and splendor.

Unmasking the Master

As seen in previous Air Jordan 16’s, the shroud is still outfitted with snap closures and Velcro. The fastidious fasteners don’t get much camera time unless they’re being removed, but there’s still a pop of teal on the inside that keeps things bright.

boardroom
Image/permission by Nike

Once the shroud is removed, Boardroom keeps things low-key. Microsuede is the perfect textile to frame the iridescent panels. Teal remains evenly toned-out from the patent toe box down to the outsole, making the colorway multi-dimensional.

Bordeaux: Cheers to Air Jordan 12

By

Jordan fans are drunk with excitement this week. Air Jordan 12 “Bordeaux” arrives in stores October 14, and is about to make a big splash. The classy colorway with premium suede construction is a smooth $190. The bold, sophisticated release is Nike’s addition to the red shoe trend of Fall/Winter 2017. From the looks of it, Bordeaux is quickly becoming one of the most unique shoes of the season.

Cheers to Bordeaux

Bordeaux is sexy and sophisticated. Think old money, expensive drinks, and a European feel. The wine itself hails from the Bordeaux region of France, and its sweet decadence is best described by Madeline Puckette of Wine Folly right here. As you can tell, it’s a drink for a those with a refined palate, the same way  Jordans are a sneaker for those with a certain shoe appreciation.

bordeaux
Image/permission by Nike

Of course the new and updated look to the Air Jordan 12 intends to wow, between its premium suede construction and shiny silver lace grabs. Bordeaux dons the elegance of an unopened bottle of wine, but by the end of this week, Jordan fans are ready to uncork and party. And they will.

The Takeaway Colorway

The colorway is what has everyone talking about Bordeaux. Nike is no stranger to the spectrum of reds, Bordeaux emerges as an iconic colorway for the Air Jordan 12. It does suede justice, the same way jewel tones do, and provides a new look for the over 20-year-old design.

bordeaux
Image/permission by Nike

The color stays current with Fall fashion, closely mirroring Pantone‘s colors of the season. It’s no surprise that Bordeaux draws inspiration from the New York palette, in which Tawny Port is a season favorite.

It rises above the other 10 colors, mostly because of its takeover of boots. While winter boots usually come in two staple colors, black and brown, this season has begun to see reds become a competitive third party. Bordeaux leads the seasonal shoe party, starting this weekend.

Bottoms Up

The sole of Bordeaux is just as full-bodied as the rest of the shoe. The houndstooth grip and Jumpman logo keep the shoe’s primary color. White contrast detail encases the snakeskin print, providing a little edge to the classy, understated release.

Elevated Excellence: AF-1 Takes it Up a Notch

By

The AF-1 is about as innovative and fashion-forward as you can get. Nike is at the forefront of Fall/Winter 2017 with Air Force 1 “Elevated Excellence,” with a fresh take on how denim is done. They’re definitely doing it right, and for $200, you can do it too. Check out why Elevated Excellence will be the most talked about shoe of the season:

Elevated Excellence Takes it Up a Notch

Elevated Excellence delivers the idea of classy-casual shoes in a way only Nike can. They’re the right mix of awesome and ostentatious, all while staying true to Nike’s roots. The AF-1 design shines through the release, and lends itself to a trendy interpretation of denim as a fashion staple.

elevated excellence
Image/permission by Nike

Nike is no stranger to experimenting with one of the most popular materials in fashion. Earlier this year, “Reese Denim” also made a splash by mixing light- and dark-wash denim.

Turned Up and Still Classic

The classic outsole stays true to the AF-1 design, but reaches new heights. The slightly taller sole almost reaches platform territory, but stays traditional to maintain the integrity of its original design.

elevated excellence
Image/permission by Nike

Elevated Excellence still delivers an jaw-dropping new look to the original AF-1. While the denim certainly gives the shoe serious flavor, its suede detail takes it up a notch. As seen in both December Sky (lighter colorway) and Binary Blue (darker colorway), the suede stays in the same shade family to enhance– rather than dominate- the overall look.

elevated excellence
Image/permission by Nike

The stitching detail also enhances rather than dominates. While denim is often seen with contrast stitching (mustard or brown thread), Elevated Excellence utilizes thread that matches the suede. Such a design keeps the lines clean and sedated, especially with heavy red sequin detail. The design stays true to its name, and elevates itself to a high-fashion status.

Undeniable 90’s Vibes

There are undeniable 90’s vibes emanating from Elevated Excellence. It taps into the year’s 90’s revival trend with its thicker outsole, light-wash denim, and big flower pattern.

elevated excellence
Image/permission by Nike

Don’t worry– they’re a far cry from the Spice Girl monster bootsLevi’s mom jeans, and Blossom’s infamous flower hat. Nike instead plucks the best from 90’s with Elevated Excellence, defining the shoe as a definite member of this decade.

Jump On It

Step up your style this season by adding the AF-1 Upstep “Elevated Excellence” to your wardrobe. Act fast, though, because this denim is undeniably hot this season.

AF-1’s get all the love anyway, but this time, fans are smitten. The shoe celebrates the work, the hustle, and everything in between when it comes to basketball. Love for the 1 is all about continuing the love affairsPiano19 that have been around for 35 years– between basketball and its players, as well as Nike and the game itself.

Nike designs with intention, and with Love for the 1, they make the connection between AF-1’s and basketball very clear. Not only is the AF-1 logo featured in contrast stitching on the hell tab, there’s also a well-placed Jerry West NBA logo tab emerging from the hell counter.

Colorways for Days

Love for the 1 is available in 7 colorways, because after all, there’s a lot of territory to cover. There’s no better way to commemorate what Nike calls “team spirit and full-force hustle” (via Nike.com) than in NBA-driven colorways. White, Black, University Red, Team Red, Game Royal (Blue), Neptune Green, Amarillo (Yellow) all rock the court this October.

Not one, but two reds are part of the AF-1 Low NBA collection: University Red (above) and Team Red (pictured later). While they’re stand-alone colorways in their own right, they are further defined by the difference in their Swoosh colors.

Rosso Corsa: Shoe Sophisticate

The newest member of the Jordan family arrives September 23.  The Air Jordan 32 “Rosso Corsa” is the talk of the block, and for $185, you might be able to park it in your driveway. The rock-steady Jordan Brand breaks ground with a luxury, racing-car inspired silhouette. Collectors are going wild while they wait to take Rosso Corsa out for a spin. Here’s why:

Rosso Corsa, the Shoe Sophisticate

The Air Jordan 32 makes its debut with Rosso Corsa, with a luxurious leap into another chapter of Jordan Brand history. Still, in all its newness, the Air Jordan 32 is authentic and true to its roots– so says Jumpman himself:

“We’ve always explored new materials and technology to create the best game shoe. That was evident when we went to Italy to make the II, and it still rings true today. On the XXXII, we challenged our designers to push the limits while staying true to the brand’s DNA.”

-Michael Jordan

Jordan confirms exactly what you thought you were seeing– a lot of inspiration from the Air Jordan 2. Even the Air Jordan tongue patch is the same as it was on its forefather.

rosso corsa
Image/permission by Nike

The new design by Tate Kuerbis is still heavily inspired by the finer things in life, and especially, MJ’s affinity for fast cars. The futuristic ribbed detail bears a striking resemblance to side and hood vents on cars with engines to envy. But as in many finer automobiles, the detail isn’t ostentatious; instead, it complements the overall look.

rosso corsa
Image/permission by Nike

Racing Red Makes Them Green with Envy

So why choose Rosso Corsa, which is Italian for “Racing Red,” as the launch colorway? The unique color is the historical racing hue for Italian race cars, like Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Ferrari. It’s hard to look at it and not think about racing, shifting gears, and cars that look more like artwork than the machines that they are.

rosso corsa
Image/permission by Nike

Kuerbis admits he designed the laces to blend in with the knit. As he says, there’s an obsession with putting “many of the performance elements under the hood.” In true Jordan Brand form, the color and construction make for an innovative, collectible design.

Smooth Operator

But does Rossa Corsa ride as smoothly as it looks? Of course it does. Here’s Nike’s overview of what’s to come in the Air Jordan 32:

rosso corsa

The Flyknit elevates the fit from good to near-perfect, and the Zoom Air Units present the most cushioning yet. How sum up the sporty, luxurious, and record-breaking release? Just refer to the inside of Rosso Corsa‘s tongue: Bellisimo.

Rolling out More AJ 32’s

Rosso Corsa is the launch colorway for the Air Jordan 32, but it’s not the only one coming your way. Jordan Brand rolls out two other 32’s on October 18, and for the first time ever, it will launch globally in a mid and low version, Bred and Bred Low (top and bottom):

Air Jordan 32 Bred “High” translates Rosso Corsa into a fully black colorway. Bred “Low” will have the same black colorway, but features a white-on-red mid sole/out sole.

Mind Games: Mamba Mentality

By

Mastery is everything. In life, in sports, and in the mind, it’s the ultimate quest toward greatness. It’s no surprise that the master, Bruce Lee, inspired Kobe Bryant and Kyrie Irving. Their mutual admiration of the martial arts great could only mean one thing: it had to collide in a special release. KYRIE 3 “Mamba Mentality” flies into stores on September 15 for a kicking $120.00.

Mind Games with Mamba Mentality

Both Kobe Bryant and Kyrie Irving draw inspiration from Bruce Lee (1940 – 1973), the ultimate martial arts legend. Nike News says that both basketball superstars embody Lee’s famous words:

“Always be yourself. Express yourself. Have faith in yourself.”

– Bruce Lee

Mamba Mentality commemorates greatness, beginning with Bruce Lee. Nike cites that the shoe also celebrates a “passing of the torch,” referring to the relationship between veteran Kobe Bryant and 25-year-old Kyrie Irving. So what can be learned from ancestors who channelled greatness? That it all begins with the teaching of one master– who trains the next one.

Enter the Dragon

Bruce Lee shines through with red slash marks on the forefoot (via Nike.com) against his trademark yellow and black colors. They were the same colors seen on the Zoom Kobe 5, once worn by Kyrie.

mamba mentality
Image/permission by Nike

Bruce Lee meets “Mamba Mentality” on opposing sides of the shoe. The lateral side of the upper rocks a samurai-inspired design, which fades into a snakeskin pattern on the inside panels. The Eastern concept of  yin and yang seems to inspire the duality of the shoe.

mamba mentality
Image/permission by Nike

Since opposing forces drive the sport of basketball, it’s no wonder that balance plays a serious role in the game. And balance, both mentally and physically, is everything to Kobe and Kyrie.

From Dragons to the Big Boss

Mamba Mentality continues to thrill. With the stock Zoom Air unit and super-griping sole, the KYRIE 3 keeps its very best elements. The tongue rocks the apparent fusion factor, Kyrobe logo. It’s a marriage of classical Nike artistry to a new vision– torch-passing collaborations between athletes.

It could be said that the KYRIE 3 is:

“on a constant quest to become a better version of itself.”

– Kobe Bryant (via Inquirer.net)

Banned and Brilliant: Air Jordan I Flyknit

By

In 1985, Air Jordan I became one of the favorite “firsts” by Michael Jordan. As the basketball shoe that would set the tone on and off the court, it shot immediately to iconic status. This September, Jordan Brand reinvents the first with the Air Jordan I Flyknit “Banned.” Outfitted with a full Nike Flyknit construction, it’s the most breathable Air Jordan I to set foot in the world thus far. Even at a pricey $200.00, collectors are jumping at the chance to grab the newest Air Jordan I design.

Banned and Brilliant

Banned emerges as both Nike and Jordan Brand explore every available textile. In 2017 alone, we’ve seen how denim and suede have completely changed the face of classic silhouettes. Now with the signature Nike Flyknit, the favorite first (Air Jordan I), takes on a modern, diverse edge.

banned
Image/permission by Nike

Jordan Brand and Nike alike have seen success during their creative (experimentation) process, mostly because they balance risk and reward better than most brands. They take the risk on the aesthetic, because the classic design is rewarding in and of itself. That surpasses brilliance, and moves into genius territory.

banned
Image/permission by Nike

Basically, if it ain’t broke– don’t fix it. The only thing going broke, though, are the footwear fanatics.

New Material

Banned is still completely organic in design and even in the breakdown of the colorway. Air Jordan I’s introduction into a full Flyknit construction looks like a slam dunk. Not only is it a sharp-looking shoe, it’s also pretty lightweight.

banned
Image/permission by Nike

While the original leather of Air Jordan I is lightweight compared to other heavier, thicker leathers, Banned‘s Flyknit offers a more “airy” lightness. The signature Nike technology has become the textile of choice for running and training sneakers.

Increased “breathe-ability” and flexibility increase Banned’s overall comfort level. After all, they say you should spend the most money in the two places you spend the most time– in your bed, and your shoes.

banned

It makes all the sense that Jordan Brand would deliver both of those places in a single shoe. With the feeling of being in a home away from home, both athletic and casual wearers will make Banned their shoe of choice.

Still Old School

As new-and-improved as Banned might be, it’s still Old School. The Swoosh and Air Jordan patch are still displayed in in premium leather.

As for the iconic design that can be spotted a mile away, Banned still remembers its roots. Situated on the inside tongue is a golden “1985” logo, so every time you lace up, you remember the where the legacy began.

Air Emblazoned: In Your Face

Throughout 2017, Nike focused a number of its releases on simplicity. Neutral tones rocked colorways in the Nike family with taupe, olive green, and khaki coming in strong for the past three seasons. With the change in season comes a change in tone, and with Air Emblazoned, Nike goes full throttle with an in-your-face design.

air emblazoned
Image/permission by Nike

Air Emblazoned focuses on roots as much as it does presentation. The heritage of the Air Force 1 is celebrated with the in-your-face Nike Air logo. The AF1 is an iconic design in itself, but it’s important to understand that the concept of Nike Air shaped the silhouette and plays a large part in its mega success.

air emblazoned
Image/permission by Nike

So why not just use one big Nike Air logo, instead of stamping it throughout the shoe? With Air Emblazoned, it’s all about consistency and staying power. Nike goes far beyond its Swoosh and digs deep into its roots to keep dominating the footwear and apparel industries.

air emblazoned
Image/permission by Nike

Design and concept, respectively, the AF1 and Nike Air, band together through innovation– and keep delivering the best of the best. That’s where Nike draws its power, from raising the bar and rising to the occasion. As can be expected, Air Emblazoned captures this very boldness.

Colorway Continuity

The colorway continuity of Air Emblazoned keeps the AF1 design fresh while letting the aesthetic of the shoe get some attention. Think of it as interior decorating: the house is still a home, but it just happens to get a facelift.

air emblazoned
Image/permission by Nike

The wallpaper-esque colorway has its very own crown molding with same-color laces. With no stark contrast, as well as the absence of contrast stitching, Air Emblazoned lets the simple but bold aesthetic lead the shoe.

Bold Versus Simple

What does Air Emblazoned say about Nike’s direction with upcoming releases this season? It could mean that bold is the decided tone for the fall. At the very least, bold shoes (like this one) keep the release calendar as dynamic as possible.

air emblazoned
Image/permission by Nike

On the other hand, fall and winter releases could keep the pendulum swinging between bold and simple. So whether you’re on board with a loud new addition to your collection, or are looking to take it down a notch with some everyday kicks– Nike has something in store for you no matter what. Right now, though, it’s hard to resist Air Emblazoned.

Return to Excellence

A lot can happen in five years, but it seems like a very short amount of time in between a shoe’s debut and its reissue. When it comes to shoe like The Return, it’s simply timeless.

return
Image/permission by Nike

When it came out in 2012, runners were drawn to the sleek look of the new, lightweight shoe. Once they tried it on, little more than five minutes would pass before they bought it.

Hints of History

The Flyknit Trainer has one of the most unique, sought-after silhouettes in the world of sneakers. It’s also an obvious member of Nike’s family of running shoes. Much like the Classic Cortez, worn by greats like Steve Prefontaine, the Flyknit Trainer strips down to the bare essentials.

The streamlined, no-fuss design centers around flush details, like the flat heel pull tab, and smooth exterior panels. Even the Swoosh is flat, as opposed to being raised or embroidered.

Even the treads maintain a level of simplicity, with geometric pattern that keeps the focus on grip and shock absorption.

Above all else, the Flyknit Trainer was made with the runner in mind. The Return maintains the sentiment that whatever a runner wants– Nike delivers. That’s when it becomes what the runner needs.

Capture the Future

The Return is a stand-alone sneaker for runners, and plays an important role as part of the Nike army. As one of the “shoes of the future,” it focuses on a modern look with integrated technology. Gone are the days where sneakers were either attractive or functional– Nike delivers both.

return
Image/permission by Nike

The Return is a part of Nike’s roll out future-centric designs. From the 2016’s HyperAdapt 1.0, to this month’s Air Max 97 OG Future Forward, it’s obvious that the brand is in control of the footwear industry’s destiny. From the looks of it, Nike really is the past, present, and future– and that’s not changing anytime soon.

Woven Wonder Thrills

Woven Wonder is on its way to becoming the top drop in women’s sneakers this year. It rocks the neutral trend that Nike has been riding for the past three seasons, and even manages to include a small palette of colors in woven detail. Sure, a crisp summer white and easily become a snowy winter white– but the jewel-tone weave keeps all colors in play.

The unconventional profile turns a boring white sneaker turn into an edgy, fashion-forward footwear pick. The design embraces youth and modernity, which rest upon the classic look of a Nike sole. The luxurious suede delivers a soft sophistication to the overall design, all while maintaining a classy, sporty look. Woven Wonder is certainly in a league of its own, but is clearly a member of Team Nike.

Ties that Binds

Woven Wonder is all about getting wrapped up in the shoe. That’s why not one, but two, unique style elements drive the point home in way that only Nike can.

The laces bleed to the outside panel, and blend into the jewel-tone weave surrounding the shoe. The off-center placement of laces leaves the instep somewhat exposed, but more comfortable. The smooth quarter panel/toe box are one, giving Woven Wonder more of an everyday look. It looks like Casual Fridays just got more interesting.

The jewel-tone weave separates the shoe into different areas. Rather than the traditional 4-corner approach to a sneaker, Woven Wonder separates into Northern and Southern hemispheres– with the weave as the Equator. Could it be that Woven Wonder is the 8th Wonder of the World? Globe-trot and find out for yourself– exploring is easy with the added comfort of the Nike Air unit.

Bob and Weave in Athleisure

It’s no secret that Nike has been dominating the athletic and athleisure apparel markets for some time now. Footwear is goes hand in hand with lifestyle, so where does that leave Woven Wonder? Everywhere, actually.

More Air on the Rise

More Air is on the rise. The newest addition to the Air More Uptempo family makes a bold statement with the harsh lines of its colorway. Of course, the sneaker draws a hard line in the ground against its competition.

As one of the most-preferred basketball shoes of the 90’s, Air More Uptempo has a long history of putting up a fight against stiff competition. Now spanning 3 decades– the 90’s, 00’s, and the Teens, perhaps the tri-color colorways speaks to the design’s three-decade run. One way or another, though, More Air emerges a timeless piece of the Air More Uptempo collection.

Tri-Color Colorway

The tri-color colorway comes at a unique time for Nike releases. Neutrals seems to be in competition with one another, vying to be the most dynamic item in any collector’s closet. More Air takes on three neutrals at once by delivering an “in-your-face” colorway. As the shoe that complements everything, it’s going to be hard to decide when not to wear them.

Even the sole detail maintains the colorway down to the hardwood, giving More Air consistency throughout its silhouette.

From all aspects and angles, More Air stays true to form with a solid colorway execution.

Classic Keeping It Crisp

Some details are so good, there’s no reason to stray from what looks fresh. More Air retains its cable pull tabs and the heel and on the tongue, which complement the round lace detail. Continuity is key, and with More Air, its good looks stay true to form.

Tale of Two Cities: Storyteller

Nike delivers a chapter in life, basketball, and society with its Los Angeles-inspired shoe. LA is touted as a city with big lights where regular people go to become stars. It’s also Everyman’s land, cultured and diverse, with people from all walks of life.

Tale of Two Cities brings the community together with none other than the proving ground that does it best– the hardwood. Nike says it best:

“Basketball is the common languages of all Los Angeles, with on-court competition burring lines across city boundaries and bringing the community together.”

– Nike.com, “React Hyperdunk 2017 Low ‘Tale of Two Cities'”

An LA Kind of Way

In an LA-kind-of-way, Tale of Two Cities embraces innovation. The new Nike REACT cushioning performs well, no matter where Tale of Two Cities finds itself. It offers the same exceptional shock abortion from the concrete to the hardwood.

The same cutting-edge sole is seen in the “React Hyperdunk Low 2017 “Failure is Not an Option”, which also arrives on August 3.

Side-by-Side

Tale of Two Cities asks wearers to live a day in someone else’s shoes. Rather than combining prints symmetrically, there are two distinctly different shoes in the pair. While they share the same “landscapes,” in an eclectic mix, you’ll see how they’re uniquely displayed to reflect the two sides of LA.

The left side rocks the natural, West Coast vibes of easy living. Leaves are outlined against an orangy-red sunset scene. The right side features an urban backdrop, with bricks that echo outdoor courts.

The stock laces are two different colors, orange and yellow. The Swoosh on the exterior panel of each shoe are different colors as well, with one green and one yellow.

The Drew League basketball patch on the tongue is identical on both shoes. Nike holds true to its claim: even as many sides to Los Angeles as there are, basketball will always be a dominating presence throughout the city.

Words of Wisdom

Tale of Two Cities offers words of wisdom, in the spirit of Nike. They’re displayed on the inside heel of the sole, as opposed to the exterior shoe. “No Excuses” appears on the left, while “Just Produce” appears on the right.

From the company whose message is “Just do it,” both pairs of words pack the same punch with a forward-thinking attitude. After all, it’s the only way to live if you’re in LA.
