The out-of-this-world Shox Gravity Metallic Gold enters the atmosphere this week. It preserves the iconic 2000 design with the right updates to make it “rocket-ready” in 2018.

Metallic Gold takes the big-ticket look of the futuristic HyperAdapt, and delivers a sporty, down-to-earth style that is fit to be on everyone’s feet. While it doesn’t have the HyperAdapt’s lacing technology, it does feature a conversation-starter of a lacing get-up. It’s “easy-on, easy-off” (Nike.com)— an attribute warmly welcomed by athletes. Of course, the laces and upper are what you see at first sight, but there’s a lot more to the newest Shox Gravity.

Aaron Cooper, the Mind of the Design

The Shox design is a hit, and it all goes back to Nike’s Global Create team, especially Aaron Cooper. This quote from an interview with Edgar Daily says it all:

Metallic Gold takes the Shox right into the 21st with serious technology updates. Cooper approached the new design from a cushioning angle, leading with the “feeling of gravity-defying flow” (Nike.com). It’s more than just connecting with the ground, Cooper explains; it’s a matter of getting “something back” with each step.

The side-by-side shows the aesthetic updates to the Shox, which are just as much mechanical and technical in nature. Traditional laces are forgone for a cable system whose bungee styling are fastened and fitted with an adapted barrel cord lock.

Metallic Gold also features a wrapping of the top plate around the bottom of the heel, as opposed to its previously exposed profile. There’s also special foam cushioning at the heel, making this iteration of the Shox the most flow-oriented one yet.

The goal of the updates? While each new design feature functions in a more independent capacity, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts– Shox Gravity Metallic Gold is a stand-out shoe that speaks to the future of design and innovation at Nike.

Plenty of sports stars and Olympians were featured on boxes of Wheaties (General Mills) Corn Flakes (Kellogg’s), but MJ’s Gatorade started the decade’s advertising frenzy. (Think: the “Got Milk?” campaign.) The original commercial (below) was so successful, that different versions of it were recreated as recently as 2015.

The Air Jordan 3 silhouette is adapted to reflect more of a tennis shoe vibe, considering it’s not a mid-top. The paring down of the ankle detail keeps the overall look sporty, sleek, and down to business. The Nike Air unit isn’t visible on this release, but that’s just fine considering there’s plenty more to admire on Atmos.
