Woven Wonder Thrills

Woven Wonder is on its way to becoming the top drop in women’s sneakers this year. It rocks the neutral trend that Nike has been riding for the past three seasons, and even manages to include a small palette of colors in woven detail. Sure, a crisp summer white and easily become a snowy winter white– but the jewel-tone weave keeps all colors in play.

woven wonder

The unconventional profile turns a boring white sneaker turn into an edgy, fashion-forward footwear pick. The design embraces youth and modernity, which rest upon the classic look of a Nike sole. The luxurious suede delivers a soft sophistication to the overall design, all while maintaining a classy, sporty look. Woven Wonder is certainly in a league of its own, but is clearly a member of Team Nike.

Ties that Binds

Woven Wonder is all about getting wrapped up in the shoe. That’s why not one, but two, unique style elements drive the point home in way that only Nike can.

woven wonder
Image/permission by Nike

The laces bleed to the outside panel, and blend into the jewel-tone weave surrounding the shoe. The off-center placement of laces leaves the instep somewhat exposed, but more comfortable. The smooth quarter panel/toe box are one, giving Woven Wonder more of an everyday look. It looks like Casual Fridays just got more interesting.

woven wonder
Image/permission by Nike

The jewel-tone weave separates the shoe into different areas. Rather than the traditional 4-corner approach to a sneaker, Woven Wonder separates into Northern and Southern hemispheres– with the weave as the Equator. Could it be that Woven Wonder is the 8th Wonder of the World? Globe-trot and find out for yourself– exploring is easy with the added comfort of the Nike Air unit.

Bob and Weave in Athleisure

It’s no secret that Nike has been dominating the athletic and athleisure apparel markets for some time now. Footwear is goes hand in hand with lifestyle, so where does that leave Woven Wonder? Everywhere, actually.

More Air on the Rise

More Air is on the rise. The newest addition to the Air More Uptempo family makes a bold statement with the harsh lines of its colorway. Of course, the sneaker draws a hard line in the ground against its competition.

As one of the most-preferred basketball shoes of the 90’s, Air More Uptempo has a long history of putting up a fight against stiff competition. Now spanning 3 decades– the 90’s, 00’s, and the Teens, perhaps the tri-color colorways speaks to the design’s three-decade run. One way or another, though, More Air emerges a timeless piece of the Air More Uptempo collection.

Tri-Color Colorway

The tri-color colorway comes at a unique time for Nike releases. Neutrals seems to be in competition with one another, vying to be the most dynamic item in any collector’s closet. More Air takes on three neutrals at once by delivering an “in-your-face” colorway. As the shoe that complements everything, it’s going to be hard to decide when not to wear them.

Even the sole detail maintains the colorway down to the hardwood, giving More Air consistency throughout its silhouette.

From all aspects and angles, More Air stays true to form with a solid colorway execution.

Classic Keeping It Crisp

Some details are so good, there’s no reason to stray from what looks fresh. More Air retains its cable pull tabs and the heel and on the tongue, which complement the round lace detail. Continuity is key, and with More Air, its good looks stay true to form.

Tale of Two Cities: Storyteller

Nike delivers a chapter in life, basketball, and society with its Los Angeles-inspired shoe. LA is touted as a city with big lights where regular people go to become stars. It’s also Everyman’s land, cultured and diverse, with people from all walks of life.

Tale of Two Cities brings the community together with none other than the proving ground that does it best– the hardwood. Nike says it best:

“Basketball is the common languages of all Los Angeles, with on-court competition burring lines across city boundaries and bringing the community together.”

– Nike.com, “React Hyperdunk 2017 Low ‘Tale of Two Cities'”

An LA Kind of Way

In an LA-kind-of-way, Tale of Two Cities embraces innovation. The new Nike REACT cushioning performs well, no matter where Tale of Two Cities finds itself. It offers the same exceptional shock abortion from the concrete to the hardwood.

tale of two cities
Image/permission

The same cutting-edge sole is seen in the “React Hyperdunk Low 2017 “Failure is Not an Option”, which also arrives on August 3.

Side-by-Side

Tale of Two Cities asks wearers to live a day in someone else’s shoes. Rather than combining prints symmetrically, there are two distinctly different shoes in the pair. While they share the same “landscapes,” in an eclectic mix, you’ll see how they’re uniquely displayed to reflect the two sides of LA.

tale of two cities
Image/permission by Nike

The left side rocks the natural, West Coast vibes of easy living. Leaves are outlined against an orangy-red sunset scene. The right side features an urban backdrop, with bricks that echo outdoor courts.

tale of two cities

The stock laces are two different colors, orange and yellow. The Swoosh on the exterior panel of each shoe are different colors as well, with one green and one yellow.

tale of two cities
Image/permission by Nike

The Drew League basketball patch on the tongue is identical on both shoes. Nike holds true to its claim: even as many sides to Los Angeles as there are, basketball will always be a dominating presence throughout the city.

Words of Wisdom

Tale of Two Cities offers words of wisdom, in the spirit of Nike. They’re displayed on the inside heel of the sole, as opposed to the exterior shoe. “No Excuses” appears on the left, while “Just Produce” appears on the right.

tale of two cities

From the company whose message is “Just do it,” both pairs of words pack the same punch with a forward-thinking attitude. After all, it’s the only way to live if you’re in LA.

Dressed to Impress

Instant Fly really is fly when it comes to a appearance. The ivory/infrared colorway gives the shoe a clean and updated look in premium suede.

There is also a fresh take on the construction, where the tongue and forefoot are actually combined in a single piece. With fewer “moving parts” to the shoe, Instant Fly has a more comfortable and exact fit to the foot.

Instant Fly, Instant Gratification

Knee-jerk reactions aren’t always the best, especially when it ends up in a knee injury. Instant Fly combats tough, hard landings with “lightweight, responsive and durable Nike React foam” (via Nike.com). Nike’s newest anti-shock technology is on point when it comes to keeping joints safe during the game.

Leave high-impact connections in the past, and look to the future for a “springy,” cushioned return to the floor. As the master shock-absorber, players can stay focused on the game instead of stressing over injuries.

As the World Turns

The court might be a rectangle, but players move in every shape and direction. Instant Fly also features the brand-new, ultimate outsole to grace the court:

“multi-directional traction pattern in the form of four high-pressure wear zones, all of which provides optimal grip on the hardwood.”

– Nike.com

The “hot spots” of the outsole give the player a much better, safer turning radius. With 360 degrees of usable surface area, Instant Fly quickly runs circles around its competition.

Days in the Lives of Flight

The concept of “Flight,” defined by Jumpman himself, continues to carry Jordan Brand into the 21st Century. The brand has expanded its family to top athletes over the years, proving that coming generations can continue to carry the torch passed by Michael Jordan.

Of course, when thinking of the brand, we envision top athletes at peak performance. It just so happens that Nike created Instant Fly for injured Blake Griffin of the LA Clippers. Writer Chris Harris explains that the performance-ready shoe was made with injured players, like Griffin, in mind (via HypeBeast).

Griffin has suffered a litany of injuries during his career, most recently a serious one to his big toe that has put him out of commission temporarily. The key word is temporarily; he just signed a new, “5-year deal, $173 million contract” with the Clippers (via ESPN.com).

Kevin Terpening’s Take

Kevin Terpening is no stranger to Nike SB. He’s certainly no stranger to delivering the best of tricks and flips to the world of skateboarding.

Skate Longer
Image/permission by Nike

That’s why his “spin on the style” (Nike.com) is meaningful, especially when he decided to tap the Air Jordan I Royal for Skate Longer‘s colorway. The throwback color splash marries the look of Jordan brand with the feel of Nike SB.

Skate Longer: Everlasting Greatness

Skate Longer celebrates the everlasting greatness that embodies Nike SB. Even its name, Skate Longer, focuses on the longevity of both the brand and the skateboarder. When it comes down to the shoe, though, its real strength is the diversity of textiles used to create it. With so many strong points, quite literally, Skate Longer is indestructible.

Skate Longer
Image/permission by Nike

The Flyknit and mesh of the vamp and side panels shoulder the majority of impact, while the leather toebox and wrap keep the shoe as flexible as possible.

Skate Longer
Image/permission by Nike

There are no visible stitches to get dirty, with the exception of the blue leather Swoosh and heel contour strip. Of course, the stitching is also blue, minimizing any appearance of trace dirt that is often seen in light-colored contrast stitching.

Swept Off the Feet

Skate Longer sweeps sneakerheads and skateboarders off their feet, all thanks to two design enhancements.

Skate Longer

The Flyknit ankle collar adds another level of connection between the boarder and its board. The added layer also increases ankle support with a comfortable, snug fit. The same way a boarder adapts to its environment, the Flyknit collar molds to ankle for a supreme fit.

Skate Longer
Image/permission by Nike

The Dunk’s lines are also streamlined to enhance both fit and wear. While it improves flexibility, Skate Longer preserves its integrity as skateboarding shoe that can take a beating. With that said, the premium mesh and Flyknit help keep Skate Longer looking fresher, longer, despite wear and tear.

Decon, the Epitome of Luxury Sneakers

Decon shows that Jordan Brand is a yacht in a sea of tugboats. The release is a nod to high society and the finer things. Presented in the Air Jordan II style, Decon combines a classic silhouette with serious attention to detail. Formerly seen in leather, Decon now rocks a suede finish. The ultra-lux, extra-posh sneaker is officially– a shoe.

A yacht, largely a status symbol as a high-ticket item for any playboy, appears to inspire the collection. The essence of yacht-level luxury is captured with the namesake beige colorway for Decon, “Sail.” The other two colorways, Thunder Blue and Black, display sea-versus-night-sky colors.

The Spirit of Italy

Air Jordan II boasted Italian craftsmanship and exotic leather upon its 1986 debut. Now 21 years later, Jordan Brand builds upon fine construction with an even finer textile, suede.

The more delicate finish presents a refined, sophisticated look. Suede is a classier and more mature in a way that makes Decon indisputably up-market. In the spirit of Italian-inspired fashion standards, Decon aims high for upscale fashion.

The Finer Things

Decon has some of the finest stitching detail. Stitching has always been solid on Jordans, but the thread against the suede shows its real precision. The flush design of the Air Jordan II is given new dimension with monochromatic stitching, particularly at the heel.

Jordan X Converse Pack: All About Beginnings

The Jordan X Converse Pack celebrates two pivotal moments of MJ’s career, and explains how they collide. The Converse Fastbreak marks the first time the world watched Michael Jordan play the Game. It’s hard to imagine a pre-Air Jordan world, but yes, it definitely existed.

The historic mid-top by Converse inspired subsequent silhouettes of Jordan Brand. Now, with the Jordan X Converse Pack, fans can see how both shoes shaped history, fashion, and basketball since the 1980’s.

First Appearance with the Fastbreak

Everybody starts somewhere, and when it came to MJ’s shoes, it was the Converse Fastbreak.

At the time Michael Jordan was wearing the Fastbreak, Converse was pushing over 70 years in the footwear industry. In 2003, Nike would acquire Converse in a $305 million deal (via Bradley Seth McNew). Nike, now the parent company of Converse and Jordan brands, knows full well that the original Converse Fastbreak deserves its solo in the spotlight. It has no problem shining, even alongside the Air Jordan II in the Jordan X Converse Pack.

Shutter Shock with Reframe Speed

Reframe Speed presents a new way of envisioning speed: with photogenic decadence. The bold running sneaker retains its Nike Zoom Air unit, and it’s visible to onlookers (really, fans).

Reframe Speed is also causing shutter shock, allowing its wearer to speed past other runners on the track. It all becomes a blur for the competition, but for the Reframe Speed athlete, the run has a crystal-clear end in sight: Number One.

Picture-perfect Detail

As one of the most unique-looking designs, keep in mind that the Chalapuka design borrows the best elements from the “Talaria, the visible 3/4-length Nike Zoom Air unit” (via Nike.com). The mid sole features herringbone toward the toe, followed by a wavy design toward the heel.

reframe speed

As for the outsole, its grip is strictly geometric. With strategically designed square nubs, athletes can welcome improved traction in their runs.

Reframe Speed is also equipped with a matte mudguard as well as a suede heel pull tab.

reframe speed

Flat laces in a double-helix pattern complete the sleek profile of the Chalapuka design, and like all of its other design elements, it serves a greater purpose. The lace pattern, a favorite among runners, improves fit across the instep, keeping the sneaker secured during periods of high activity.

Reframe Speed will be available in both Black, as pictured throughout the article, and below, in an Armory Blue colorway.

Shoot with Socks or No Socks

It’s an easy decision to pick up a pair in either Black or Armory Blue. One burning question remains: does one wear socks with, or without, Reframe Speed? The large ventilation windows make it easy to see your sock game. The solution is simple: if it’s on fleek, then by all means carry on with some fresh Nike socks. If your socks are wrecked, though- then you have some work to do.

reframe speed
Image/permission by Nike

On the other side of the aisle, footwear aficionados say it boils down to a seasonal thing. When it’s pushing 90 degrees, the ventilation windows help combat sweaty feet in scorching weather.  The verdict? Whether you’re shooting for socks or no socks, Reframe Speed will satisfy both fashion and functionality needs.

Socks or no socks, Air Zoom Chalapuka Reframe Speed ranks at the very top of summer’s “must-have” list. Make sure you’re wearing it in every picture of the season.

The Air Jordan Finals Pack XIII/XIV DMP slides into stores June 14, ready to tell the legendary tale of Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals performance. It was the best of times for Michael Jordan. It was the worst of times- for anyone on the other teams. Jumpman’s ferocity is memorialized in a collectible set that will sell for $500 in select stores.

Finals Pack: It’s a Wrap

The Finals Pack celebrates Jordan’s greatness and the Bulls’ victory in the 1998 NBA Finals. Game 6 against the Utah Jazz set NBC’s ratings record, with a “22.3 rating and 38% audience share” (via JET).

Despite the remarkable viewership of the Finals and a stand-out performance, Jordan retired in 1999. It looked like that was a wrap for Jordan’s legendary career, but just one year later, he returned to the game as “part-owner and executive” for the Washington Wizards (via Richard Sandomir).

Besides the magnetic performance of His Airness, his shoes kept fans on their toes. He alternated between pairs of the Air Jordan XIII and XVI, making waves in the worlds of basketball and fashion each time. Now with the Finals Pack, MJ fans can relive the excitement of the 1998 Finals.

Tale of Two Shoes: Air Jordan XIII and XIV

Air Jordan XIII is the white lightening of the pair. The bright white and gold colorway is sealed with white laces. As a perfect compliment to its mate, the Air Jordan XIV reigns as black thunder. The sleek, modern silhouette cuts into action with black-on-black laces.

Golden Connections

The Finals Pack includes two very different Air Jordan styles, but they are connected by a shared, distinguished gold theme.

A more modern, matte gold is featured on the side and back panels of the white Air Jordan XIII.

The Air Jordan XIV, black, features a metallic gold on sole and in the Jumpman medallion logo.

Words Tell the Tale

Michael Jordan’s famous words to Scottie Pippin, “They can’t win until we stop,” (via Nick Christie, YouTube) are memorialized on both pairs of shoes.

Located on the inside of the tongue, it just goes to show that what’s on the inside- counts the most. As it applies to MJ, the game is as much mental as it is physical.

The words also continue the Nike trend of “statement shoes,” where branding and imaging of shoes moves beyond colorways and themes. Speaking of words, what about the “DMP” in the release’s official name? DMP is an acronym for “Defining Moments Pack,” which couldn’t be a more fitting name. After all, Game 6 certainly falls in that category.

Urban Utility: Boots on the Ground with AF1

By

Nike has had its “boots” on the ground since the Air Force 1 debuted in 1982. The military-inspired silhouette is one of the boldest, toughest shoes out there, so it’s no wonder that people are planning to line up on June 8. The newest member of the Air Force 1 family, “Urban Utility” will run you about $170- if you manage to get a pair before they run out.

Boots on the Ground Legacy

Urban Utility proves that Nike’s designs are just like fine wines. The Air Force 1 silhouette is 35 years old, but with each passing year, it gets better with age. Innovation has pushed the shoe into clear and present fashion.

While it’s still a high-priority high-top (and mid- and low-top) pick for the hardwood floor, the streets are getting a taste of the fashion icon. Urban Utility leans toward its military roots with an industrial edge.

The leather toe box takes an aggressive lead as a fierce front to the shoe. The woven quarter/rear panel experiments with two-toned camouflage.

The mid sole and outer sole maintain AF1 character, this time with a military khaki color.

Versatility of Urban Utility

Street fashion is built on the foundation of a concrete jungle, where fashion and versatility intersect. Urban Utility presents one of many “featured-up” versions of the AF1.

Outfitted with a removable strap and heel zip, it’s easy to slip in or out of the shoes. As much as the strap and zip are distinctly hardware features, they also serve as embellishments. A mid-rise collar keeps the focus on the fancy features, all while maintaining a sleek, low-profile look for Urban Utility.

The “military-issue” vibe is topped off with stock information on the rear outer panel. The most important line? Check out the very last one. The Division listed is “Goddess of Victory,” which is no surprise at all- Nike was actually the Greek goddess of victory.

From the looks of it, she reigns supreme and emerges victorious well into the 21st century.

Air Max 1 Premium Presents Jewels of June

By

The Air Max 1 just celebrated its 30th anniversary, but that doesn’t mean Nike is finished celebrating. Air Max 1 Premium arrives in classic style, on June 5, in two equally fresh colors. Of course, the colorway on both is white-on-white, but a careful look at detail reveals how Black Diamond and Rare Ruby steal the show at $140.

Air Max: The Real Gem of Nike

The Air Max is a defining shoe for Nike, but the Air Max 1 is the real gem. With that said, Air Max 1 Premium is the crown jewel. The classic, recognizable silhouette is maintained, but the Air Max textiles are taken to the next level.

Rather than having the suede/leather mix of its ancestor, Air Max 1 Premium features an all-leather upper, toe box, mud guard, and and tongue. Married with a white-on-white colorway, it’s  the epitome of premium.

Jewels of Air Max 1 Premium

Air Max 1 Premium is twice as nice with two versions, Black Diamond and Rare Ruby. While the shoes don the same colorway, the difference is in the details. Black and red accents are found in strategic locations, highlighting the most iconic features of the original Air Max. The colors pop at the jeweled Swoosh and embroidery (tongue pull and heel), making a bold, but subtle statement.

The ultimate color-driven feature of the Air Max 1 Premium is that of the visible Air Max unit. The great window into the soul of the Air Max is described by Nike as:

“A glimpse into the vast possibilities of this versatile, highly coveted sneaker.” (Nike.com)

The unit, presenting in both red and black, draws attention to one of Nike’s proudest pieces of technology and design.

Crystal Clear

Air Max 1 Premium also keeps things crystal clear with a translucent outsole.

Sole statements continue to trend with Nike’s hottest releases, as previously seen in April’s Air Jordan XXXI “Why Not?”. A large Swoosh spans the bottom, and is carefully encased and framed by the outsole.

So, which jewel of Nike will you choose on June 5? Whether it’s Black Diamond or Rare Ruby, Air Max 1 Premium is sure to shine this spring and summer.
